I’m three-quarters through a Henry James novel and one day I swear I’m going to find out what’s happening. Not directly, I’m sure, I’ve given up all hope of that, but afterwards. Afterwards, perhaps someone will elucidate.

So I read The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and am sorry to say that I knew who the murderer was within three pages, and I’d worked out how it was done within thirty pages or so. I’m rarely down on books on here, but needed to share my dismay. A not great book.

My early thoughts on the new Barnes are Christ it’s good to have him back, and god he’s such a confident writer. Knows all the little tricks to relax you into a story. Also, so funny. Unpretentiously intelligent too.
