I am on here to get the news about libraries and authors that I don't hear in other spaces. I also follow library-related tech. I don't post much, but I occasionally comment.

Depends on the definition of use? I have an 1850s crock in my hallway that I put silk flowers in. More interesting thought experiment I do fairly often - How many items in this room am I the first owner of? Also engaging - how many items in the room belong to deceased relatives?

If Illinois wants thriving universities, stronger campuses, and students who can afford to finish what they start, we must fully and equitably fund public higher education, and raise the revenue to do it by asking the wealthiest and corporations to finally pay their fair share.

You might think, “but how will we know if student outcomes are improving without testing?” and the answer is that we must support and then trust our teachers. Teachers spend their lives working with and understanding students. Many of these regimes emerged out of not trusting teachers.

Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over at work. "Reading is hard."

should stick to video cards because people hate AI for very valid reasons. Primarily that AI is hurting society and does a lot of damage.

One of our largest IFT member unions, the Chicago Teachers Union, is under investigation by a congressional committee. But let’s be clear: this isn’t about transparency. It’s political retaliation.

This is important. This has affected researchers at my university. The staff at BL are doing the best they can with what is left. They need more resources to rebuild what was lost.

As you cancel streaming services, here is a casual reminder that only 16% of Americans read for pleasure anymore, and your local library has hundreds or thousands of books you haven't read. They would love to see you stop by and renew your library card.

One of the worst things therapy ever did was allow very privileged people to believe that because they FELT ashamed That someone was shaming them on purpose And that someone who had the power to impact their emotions was the same as someone who had power over them

“Intelligence” may be the most regressive and dangerous concept in modern history. Every time it’s systems are measured they reveal that is NOT a measure of capability but a measure of preexisting access to the system of measurement.

When an institution cuts a job, or, even more likely, doesn’t fill a position, what they are doing is quietly spreading that amount of additional labor to every other worker.

If you want to control the price of eggs, you need to control bird flu. And the worst thing you can do if you want to control bird flu is censor scientists and scrub CDC data.

I just assume everyone does, but I'll say it anyway: If you're a union member, now's a REALLY good time to actually study that contract at your workplace and things like grievance processes, etc. Make sure you have contact info handy. Know what your union can do with/for you.

If this is your problem, here is a tip from a sheep farmer who doesn't drink but does have severe treatment resistant depression: 1) notice you are having existential dread 2) say, perhaps to your cat or dog, "welp, existential dread again" 3) Don't engage, go read a book or play a video game.
