First time in the last 16 years, I’m proud of my country. I have always been proud of our history and heritage, but today was just something else. Nearly 80% of Hungarians decided that they care enough to vote, and showed the largest middle finger of the decade to authoritarianism. Well done. 🫡

Almost spring?

I like work from home Wednesdays. I found some breakfast in the garden… and some lunch, and also the veggies for the rest of the week. 🍅🥒🍓

Finally, catching a break. Startup life goes with break-neck speed, it’s nice to enjoy some sunshine, and tend to our first forming crops. Sure, I love coding all week long, I enjoy my job, but it’s great to have some no-screen hobbies. ☀️🌱

I’ve heard about foxes attacking chicken coops before, sure. 🐓 But them conducting a night raid digging up my potatoes is new 🤣🦊🥔 I love you, foxes, but it’s on.

Saturday vibe after a busy week… I’m inclined to agree with the neighbour. I shall follow the wisdom of nature and follow it’s lead. 🦊

Four day weekend, commence.

New side project: since we had to move to a new house anyway, making use of our new garden. Bird feeder and bird bath out, lawn clipped, meadow seeds sowed, sowing our first vegetable crops and garden flowers indoors. 🌱 Tell me I’m approaching 40 without telling me I’m approaching 40. 🫠

Real pain of a feature to work on today, nearly untestable locally, some pretty mean event driven async systems. No other way than TDD my way though it till having confidence, then release them canaries. 🐤 I don’t usually TDD, but when I do… they tend to save my backside. Unit tests, yay!

What a last few weeks. Love working for a startup, I can never anticipate the curve balls I’m getting, and really excited to get them solved. I’ve been working on solving some race conditions between micro-services… and wow, do we take database transactions for granted 🤣

Nice and relaxing Sunday, on the way out of the seasonal depression. Green tends to be helpful. Really need to recharge for another hell of a week coming.

What a few months. Messy start for the year with the house moving, gloomy weather and the absolute grinder at work… Finally, looking forward to a relaxing weekend to turn it around. Will get back to studies and side project soon, but sanity first. …and a good rest, like our guest in the backyard.

Took a few days off for getting my nerves sorted, walking in somewhere green tends to help. Went out to admire some engineering work in it’s new habitat, visited the local beaver re-introduction project. Bober were asleep, but definitely hard at work at night… 🦫

We don’t have frost or snow here anymore these days, so I take what I get ❄️ I might be a hopeless romantic with the seasons, but I always feel ripped off it a winter is just wet and muddy. 🫠

Happy New Year, everyone. Expecting a particularly wild year, and crazy high pace. Also kind of nuts to see, that we are transitioning into the 2nd quarter of the century. This decade was 🦇💩 crazy so far the say the least, and not even half way through. No wonder time is flying.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is dangerous, especially combined with a holiday 🐉 I wonder where does one find a D&D group 🤣

Got to love capitalism. As a bartender, it was always crazy to find a new apartment to live, and been treated like dirt by letting agents. Worked hard, had savings, affordability. Since working in tech, got a flat in 24 hours, and suddenly called a “quality tenant”. What a society, makes me sick.

Haven’t seen a computer for weeks, this will probably be great for my possible burnout. Lots of rest during the holidays, just playing games, eat and chill. Next year is going to start really busy, and it seems like we need to organise moving a house too. In London, it’s not fun really.

One of my least favourite part of adulting coming up: looking for a new place to live, and organising the move. Rental property hunt in London, yay. Good thing wifey is pretty good at it for some reason.

Working on two things today: database indexing, and brushing up on my latte art skills. 🙃 Also featuring my debugging hamster, recently into SQL. 🐹 Pretty decent coffee machine in the office… and I always loved how making coffee, and focusing on something simple can clear my mind. ☕️

Wife has way too many books, considering how much shelf space we have… competing with board games. Big Stacks in the corner, a massive Heap in the other, and a massive hash collision on the shelves. Seems like my next side project is a new shelf. We need a library room at some point.

Christmas season is starting, having a real throwback. Throwing a cocktail night in the office, running all day like a headless chicken. Not missing much about hospitality work, but I will always enjoy making nice drinks for nice people. 🍸 Might or might not have some setup pics coming up later.

Missed almost a month of Kung Fu training due to work pressures, and wow I’m really rusty. Excited to get back to it… and I find it very character building to be so bad at something. Keeps you on the ground.

Willpower and decision making sometimes kind of feels like a finite resource. With all the calls I’m making at work, and all the little puzzles I figure out… by the weekend, I can’t even make a decision about what game to play. Decisions, decisions.

Hello, Black Friday! The only weekend of the year when I’m On Call. It’s actually pretty good. Considering how a December goes in bars and restaurants, I’m outright spoiled these days.

If the Earth was actually flat, I wouldn’t need to deal with timezones anymore?! (I’m okay, but slowly losing it 🤣😅)

Daily menu: multi-tenant timeseries data, aggregated by tenant timezone. Yikes, I’m really up for a treat today. I think my experience with Postgres very quickly went from zero to holy sh*t. 🫠

Having “fun” today with Timezones in databases… with as much sarcasm as possible. It is indeed the bane of software developers existence.

I think I haven’t opened my laptop over a weekend for well over two months now. Being a dev at a startup, coding all week, I made peace with not pushing all the time. Growing, learning a ton, and I can pull the plug now. I’m sure I’ll come back to free time coding for fun, when it feels right.

Christmas used to be a trigger word while I worked in bars and restaurants… now that I work in eCommerce, the new trigger word is Black Friday. 🤦‍♂️ Seems like all ecosystems have a time of the year where everyone loses their marbles. Few more weeks to sleep well. 🙃
