I don’t know how to simultaneously protect my mental health and remain knowledgeable about what is happening.

I took a long walk in the woods today. It smelled brown and golden, earthy and crisp. It smelled like small animals’ slumber. It smelled like gathering strength. Like patience. Like endurance.

Also, yesterday I was cleaning out my book bag advance of heading to Richmond for a conference that I am speaking at tomorrow and found my I VOTED sticker and asked Ben if we should burn it and salt the earth with the ashes and he said "it will be a collectors item when we no longer have elections"

An important sadness for me about Wednesday - my Vietnam Veteran father, who was devastated when he saw Confederate and Nazi flags in the Capitol during the insurrection coverage, now has beginning dementia. The president who set that into motion may be the last one he remembers.
