Happy Summer Solstice! How will you be celebrating the longest day of the year? ☀️ ‘Solstice’ comes from the Latin, ‘solstitium’, meaning the stopping or standing still of the sun. 📸: Silver-washed Fritillary - Sarah Womersley

These days have the pinching, dull, bone-cold ache of a gate bolt that won’t go home. A snowdrop chill. But the winter thrushes are making a chattery river high in the bare branches, & their departure won’t be long. I still hate to lose winter, even as I long for spring…

The unmistakable barn owl. 🦉 During the winter, these cherished birds spent much of their time hunting to endure the chilly months ahead. Top spotting tip: dusk is the perfect time to catch a glimpse of them in action.

Lots of lemons ripening on our lemon tree. Plenty of buds too. The tree spends the warmer months outside, where the flowers get pollinated by insects. It’s in the porch now, for the winter, so I’ll need to pollinate these flowers with a small paintbrush when they open
