This is properly brilliant. CSS - no JavaScript - used to turn a regular <select> element into a Duck Hunt-type game where you choose an option by shooting at it.

You'll be pleased to hear that after a chaotic morning of false alarms and a support call, I did in fact get an email this afternoon from UptimeRobot! Except it wasn't an update, or an incident report... it was telling me that they'd launched a brand new version of their mobile app. Which is nice.

This morning UptimeRobot started throwing random false alarms for sites which were definitely up. I wired in a few extra monitors, confirming that UptimeRobot was reporting extended outages from one region which it verified were online from another. Support chat confirmed they were having a problem.

I’m at Barbican for #SotB2026 today (what a fantastic venue!), currently watching @bram.us (what a fantastic presenter!) showing off what’s possible with CSS anchor positioning - another excellent addition to CSS that makes the web better and replaces a lot of clunky JavaScript.

This might be the most delightfully optimistic thing I have ever seen: the Crystal Palace built in Hyde Park in 1851 to house the Great Exhibition, relocated to Sydenham Hill in 1852, and COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY FIRE in 1936. But Google Maps still lists it as "Temporarily closed".

I say "it'll be fun" - I am led to believe that is it entirely possible the stream will consist of somebody writing specs (YAY!) using Markdown (WOO!) and then us goofing off & talking nonsense for an hour (HURRAH!) while Claude builds everything. This is called "enhanced productivity", by the way.

Choosing a language model for AI-assisted coding is starting to feel a bit like going into a games shop, rolling all the dice, and buying the one that rolled the highest number because clearly that one's the best.

Imagine building a data centre at the South Pole. Or in the Amazon jungle, or in Times Square... or bulldozing Mecca and building one there? Every one of those options is ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE cheaper and easier than building data centres in orbit. For starters, they have gravity and breathable air.

Seriously though if you take a job at a company called "Palantir" you don't then get suddenly develop moral concerns. It's like builders of secret volcano bases being shocked at the client list.
