Over the next 24 hours the City of Calgary will continue the work towards draining the Bearspaw Feeder Main so that excavation work can be undertaken to remove the section that broke on Dec. 30. That section will be taken for investigation, but there is no definitive timeline.

Officials say they’re “ready to roll” on repairs as they have the supplies. Next step is digging up the area to get to the pipe. City of Calgary water directors are saying 7-10 days estimate, but that could change once they get eyes on the break.

City of Calgary officials confirm the feeder main was being monitored by acoustic monitoring and there was nothing to indicate an issue before the rupture. No wire snaps either. The piece of pipe in question was installed by in 1975.

Calgary mayor Jeromy Farkas says planned New Year’s Eve celebrations are still going ahead tonight. He says they do want Calgarians to take voluntary measures to reduce indoor water use.

NEW: City of Calgary officials say last night’s water main break is “catastrophic” along the same feeder main that ruptured in June 2024. The break has been found by crews and water flow has stopped.
