Genomics hivemind: I want to genotype a bunch of diverse, heterozygous diploids with a messy genome (🌽 -- who'd have guessed?) but I care about phase. Computational phasing doesn't really cut it, so wondering what the cheapest alternatives are -- nanopore to 10-20X? Linked shortreads?

New Paper! In 2019, my first dissertation chapter revealed complicated polyploidies in the cotton family (Malvaceae) but we lacked the tools and genomes to truly understand it. Now with better genomes and improved methods, it's much more complicated than we thought. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I'm so thrilled that this paper is now out in American Journal of Botany! This paper marks a couple of exciting firsts for me - it is the first chapter of my dissertation and my first first-author publication 🎉. I hope folks enjoy reading it and become fans of personate flowers in Penstemon!

I didn't know what personate flowers are until I heard about @trinitydepatie.bsky.social's Penstemons. My conclusion is that these cute little flowers in fact dial up discrimination to max, and they make the entrance of their corolla tube sooo occluded that only the most buffed bees can enter. 👀🧪
