Over 20 years of the NSF budget. A generation of science funding! (OK, the federal part, and not NIH etc, but still, a big part of it.) Every year when I relearn that the entire NSF budget is only like $9 billion, I'm amazed at what creative, dedicated people do with a comparatively small amount.

Just a year ago, we heard reducing the deficit was so important Elon Musk had to fire as many scientists, forest rangers and Black women on the government’s payroll that he could find. Now? 🤷🏾‍♂️

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted. What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards. Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.
