I want to pick at one part of the #Unreal #UE6 brief: not about the AI part specifically but that reducing the cost of content iteration is the big problem in games to solve. In my experience, creative thrash disguised as "iteration" is one of the most dangerous forces in a group creative endeavor.

The game I am currently playing is "do I have enough clean underwear to get to Annecy?"

Early last year I was involved in pitching our little indie studio which I've since left. One of the pitch points I believed in most was that we need to release FAST. Scope for 18-24 months TOPS for a 1.0 release. If that's too short, the game is too big. Cut mercilessly.

I am not dancing on the graves of any #gamedev studio or devs here. My heart goes out to everyone caught in the games industry maelstrom of the last few years. But I am so frustrated that we largely still fail to acknowledge how the business and process became one that stopped making any sense.

I hate GenAI. If nothing else, is throwing (stolen) shit on the wall and seeing what sticks. Humans can be better than that: they can have vision! Dreams, stories, passions, experiences. But if you have that vision, it shouldn't take 10 years to achieve it (or realize it's impossible.)

Here's my shitty take again: #gamedev cycles have scaled long past what is makes any sense to run a business selling products. "It takes 5-8 years to make video games now" moved the goal posts so far out of the field where it makes no sense to play ball.

I'm an artist and I hate the amount of commission galleries charge. If you like one of an artist's pieces, wait until after the exhibition and approach them privately: you'll get the picture for half the price and the artist will make more money.

Like, if all 25-35 year veterans of games veterans of game development had shipped on 5-8 year cycles that half get cancelled, AAA dev couldn't exist. It would not be a viable business! It's kinda looking like it's become a not viable business.

My #gamedev resume is solid AF because games used to take 2 years to make. My experience is good because I got a lot of different cycles in early. At today's "accepted norms" of dev times at best, I'd have shipped 3-4 games in 25 years and more likely, had two of them cancelled.

I just rode around 140 hours of #Amtrak from LA to Seattle to Chicago and back over 2 weeks. Despite the obvious government neglect of trains and stations, it remains the best way to see America and I've done plenty of flights and road trips. The rail pass is an amazing deal, even at full price.
