I love this demonstration of distance! GOES18 is in geostationary orbit 35,800 km from earth which is 9.3% further from the moon than the earths surface. Hence the apparent size difference and annular nature of the eclipse from there Demonstrates the extraordinary coincidence we see from earth! 🌏

Eastward upper outflow For STC #Mitchell looks restricted on the IR satellite loop which is likely hampering development with increasing shear also evident. I think it has peaked and is unlikely to further intensify.

Winds picking back up on Barrow island with the backside of Severe Tropical #CycloneMitchell Radar indicates some recent Southerly movement which may put Onslow in the firing line of the Eastern eyewall.

The last hour or so of Severe Tropical Cyclone #Mitchell viah Himawari-9 at high temporal resolution (2.5min). This is from the red, 640nm band imager.

Admittedly this is resonably old (5:40am AWST 7th Feb) but it is the latest MW image with decent coverage, and it looks more impressive than I thought with really strong convection in the NE quad #CycloneMitchell. It has definitely improved since then so Im looking forward to another good sat pass.

Tropical Cyclone Mitchell (#21U / 20S) is a pretty large system and is currently at 982hPa Cat 2 (Aus scale) with sustained winds around the 50 kt (92km/h) mark. With warm seas, low-mod shear tons of moisture and good outflow, it is expected to strengthen today to cat 3 with winds to 80 kt.

Tropical Low 21U -> Tropical cyclone. Seems likely for the Pilbra / Gascoyne regions of WA with all major models on the same page. It could be a nasty one too with some models down to 960 hPa. #21U

According to BOM Tropical Cyclone Hayley has now peaked as a category 4 on the Aus scale with 10 minute sustained wind speeds of 165 km/h (100 mph). JTWC 1 min est. is the same. Shear has seemingly begun to increase and should induce weakening leading up to landfall tonight local time.

Recently named Cyclone #Hayley has unexpectedly intensified into a category 4. A cat 3 landfall is expected in the northern Kimberley. The last season to see 3 severe TC's before the New Year was way back in 1998-99. The last season to see 3 cat 4 TC's before the New Year was... never!

GFS has a fairly intense cyclone forming just before New Years near Broome, WA. It is important to note that no other model currently shows this however BOM have it as 08U with moderate chance for cyclone formation. Worth watching this one as a spinoff from the monsoon. Note another in GoC too.

A number of fire scars are visible in the Northern Perth Hills area.

#OTDwx in 2006 Cyclone Bondo underwent a very impressive period of rapid intensification northeast of Madagascar. According to JTWC winds increased from 65 to 135 knots in 18 hours. During this time a pinhole eye (as small as ~8 nm) rapidly cleared and warmed to >15°C.

Way out west of the Cocos Islands, Cyclone #Bakung moved into the Australian AoR on the weekend as a tiny, yet potent cyclone- intensifying to a category 3. The 2nd of the season now. A sign of yet another season with a high percentage of severe TC's coming up?

The first cyclone track map of the season is out with #02U #97S making landfall on Saturday AM on the Tiwi Islands as a category 2. Due to its small size, there's significant intensity uncertainty. BOM technical report mentions a chance of category 3 intensity. Next name is #Fina.

Its going to be a very wet few days for Darwin and the Tiwi islands as tropical low #02U has a high chance of developing into a low end cyclone in a few days time. It might not be super windy, but it will be very very wet ... #Watching 👀

A trough in the Indian Ocean south of Java is expected to slowly migrate Eastwards over the next few days and could develop into a tropical low early next week. While the chance is low at the moment, it is the first I've noticed for this 25/26 season for Aus which is makes it newsworthy!

The BOM is forecasting Tropical Low #02U to develop this weekend to the west of Darwin in the Timor Sea. Currently only a 15% (low) chance of cyclonic development, but the forecast does mention “environmental conditions are supportive of significant development next week”.
