17/06, 144 of 56. First garden Marbled Brown and Epinotia abbreviana, the latter too lively for a clear pic. 4 nfg in 2 days was useful. Blastodacna hellerella is a more obliging micro and a nice looker. #TeamMoth

16/06, 134 of 61. Garden list went up by two, with Caloptilia stigmatella and Poplar Lutestring. Both with several records in the surrounding area so good to add them on. After Kent it seemed slow at first but picked up after midnight. #TeamMoth.

Spent last night in a churchyard in Hertford (doing the Moth Mash, it was a graveyard smash). 158/42. It was very cool so nothing spectacular. #TeamMoth. Got home to an empty trap, but 3 on the wall. 👻

All right cockers? I got home for Cockchafer o'clock tonight! Great to see these big, bumbling beetles around. Likely emerging from the neighbour's lawns. You can see where they've been munching the young ash leaves too.

Wet days and cool nights (🥶, not 😎) have seen moth numbers crash. Not many caught last night. These two were the best. #TeamMoth. Not looking like a vast improvement in weather in coming days.

The garden is not suffering from the great migrant influx, just the usual suspects generally. Nfg was a Great Fungus Moth( neat antennae). A second Gold Cloak. Possible Ectoedemia subbimaculella would be nfg 🪓 #TeamMoth.

An amazing night doing a survey for NE at Hexton with @rahtringbirder.bsky.social we were up all night till 6am. 119 species (well over 1000 moths) so far, lots of micros to do a primary check on yet. Highlight for me was Stephensia brunnichella (not in photos), but other good moths too. #TeamMoth

Numbers much reduced last night compared to previous night. 47 species only, with far fewer micros about. Evergestis limbata on trap, so I guess this is here to stay now after arriving last year. #TeamMoth.

Lots of moths last night in garden, still several to examine. Pleased with this one as nfg. Phtheochroa schreibersiana which is a right mouthful. Gold Cloak a bit easier. #TeamMoth.

Aceria dispar, mite galls on Aspen. The first time I have come across this gall. The leaves look like they have been screwed up, creating a very wrinkle looking plant. It was very abundant in this wood. Said to be uncommon but possibly just under recorded. #galls

For years I have grown Mulleins in the garden and every year these guys arrive to eat them. For the last few years I have moth trapped, but I still have never seen an adult Mullein Moth. “It’s so unfair” 😂. #TeamMoth.

A quick look around a churchyard in N Herts produced an Ancylis badiana and several Dichrorampha acuminata. The latter common around Oxeye Daisy. #TeamMoth.

Tortula vahliana, Chalk Screwmoss. On chalk face at Ashwell in Herts. It wasn’t the easiest thing to find but we managed on a Bryophyte meeting at the end of April. #bryophytes.

Fungus meeting yesterday in Gobions Wood, Herts. Interesting finds included some small diptera under a log covered in a layer of fungi and Puccinia albescens on Adoxa. #fungi.

Collected Norway Spruce cones on 21/03 in NEHerts and today a Cydia strobilella (Spruce Seed Moth) emerged. So far (4 sites) a 100% record on collections of cones, definitely worth trying if you have Spruce. #TeamMoth

Picked up Norway Spruce cones hoping for moths later but had a few of these bugs emerge. Gastrodes abietum. Very flat to fit under cone scales. Impressive front legs. Beautiful colours. #hemiptera.

Had a walk at Weston (Herts) today following a picture from @phil-wildlife.bsky.social in our flora group and saw the Giant Butterbur Petasites japonicus. Mentioned in Trevor James’s Flora but presumably a relict of cultivation. Last seen by me in 1987 in Glos. Very nice @bsbibotany.bsky.social
