Back from team survey at Hatfield Forest where around 50 species +/- with good company. 9 of 7 in home trap, which is pretty poor, but nice to find a Small Mottled Willow had made it this far inland. #TeamMoth. 🥱 🛌.

Collected Norway Spruce cones on 21/03 in NEHerts and today a Cydia strobilella (Spruce Seed Moth) emerged. So far (4 sites) a 100% record on collections of cones, definitely worth trying if you have Spruce. #TeamMoth

Picked up Norway Spruce cones hoping for moths later but had a few of these bugs emerge. Gastrodes abietum. Very flat to fit under cone scales. Impressive front legs. Beautiful colours. #hemiptera.

Had a walk at Weston (Herts) today following a picture from @phil-wildlife.bsky.social in our flora group and saw the Giant Butterbur Petasites japonicus. Mentioned in Trevor James’s Flora but presumably a relict of cultivation. Last seen by me in 1987 in Glos. Very nice @bsbibotany.bsky.social

First trap moths of the year tonight (so far). Ypsolopha ustella and an Acleris ferrugana/notana. I’ve never had a notana so I know which it will turn into. At least it’s keeping you know who away. #TeamMoth.

The first moth of 2026. Mompha subbistrigella. On the bedroom window. A remarkable common moth in my house. I assume they come in to hibernate but get woken up by the heating. #TeamMoth.

Little and large at Lemsford Springs NR on Wednesday. Common Snipe (l) and Jack Snipe (r). Shows the difference in size and the head patterns of the two birds.

Anyone on here know anything about Cockroaches? This rather beautiful thing, 20mm (body), was a free gift at the supermarket with my veg. Lovely pale green with a white side stripe. Obs is telling me it’s a Scarce Silver Lines moth 😂. #insect #cockroach.

Really pleased today to be shown Holly Parachute, Marasmius hudsonii, whilst doing a survey for allotments in St Albans having failed to find it in local woods. Love the black hairs on the cap. #fungi.

A walk in the woods today with the Herts and Beds fungus group produced some nice Devil’s Fingers Clathrus archeri and Xylobolus subpileatus, an alien new to Britain in 2021. #fungus.

Physarum bivalve. Fir and Pond Wood. A myxomycete. I haven’t seen this before but was struck by its shape and pattern.

If you love moth trapping, or any other study of natural history (a particular group or perhaps everything), and you are curious about how it all works but don’t have a strong scientific background you really should read this book. You will be both amazed and probably slightly worried. Give it a go.
