the thing about third spaces is that you're supposed to, you know, not have to pay to exist in them. can't say that about bars nightclubs bowling alleys movie theaters (maybe marinas?). these are spaces that are declining because we're all broke and you need money to be in them.

these sorts of places are always going to downturn in economic crisis, and make no mistake this isn't just an economic crisis this is an unacknowledged freefall. there's a trillionaire now and everybody else is begging each other to borrow rent money. we're totally fucked. third spaces are needed,

but they more or less have to be funded publicly or through the generosity of wealthier people (hahahaha). anyway, maybe there's more data, but to me this is just a chart about how capitalism isn't working. the fringes and edges of it are fraying.

people keep trying to correct me over and over so let me just clarify one last time that third spaces were traditionally places you COULD spend money but didn't HAVE to in order to EXIST in them. I chose that first phrase on purpose. you used to be able to hang out in places without paying, and even

the types of places (bowling alleys, coffee shops) where you used to be able to do that will kick you out if you're not paying for something, now. it's changed. for the worse.

Bans on loitering as part of "cracking down on crime" are part of it, for sure. There's got to be correlation between emphasis on policing and people feeling uncomfortable spending time in public spaces.
