The best teaching change I’ve made recently is ending the semester with time for gratitude. I share what I am grateful for from our time & they share what they appreciate about each other as colleagues in the course. It’s joy. I will never go back to exams or turning in papers as a last class again.

There is no ethical use of GenAI tools. They are extractive—of the environment, of human labor, of the friction that characterizes human learning. AI takes—it does not give. It’s based on a compromised ethical framework. It’s no surprise it’s being used by those who are dismantling our government.

Investing in students isn't buying expensive third party AI add-ons for the LMS. It's hiring more faculty and staff so we can lower class sizes and devote more individual time to our students. College is education and WE are the educators.

If you are a university administrator that ever feels the need to send in police to arrest groups of your students for demonstrating, then you are completely unqualified to lead a campus.

I also find it really egregious that universities essentially require students to opt in to allowing TurnItIn to a) profit from adding their work to their database and b) use their assignments to reinforce cop shit in classrooms.

I visit a lot of schools to facilitate faculty development, and the most asked-for topics (often requested by admin!) are fostering belonging, relationships, and trust w/ students. Yet many of them refuse to invest in those goals, and instead blow $$ on AI shit that actively works against them.

One of my first-year, developmental writing students asked me to come & be recognized at her next volleyball match because she appreciates how I have contributed to her successful start in college. Many things suck at work right now, but that was undeniably a very good thing and I am grateful

Our beautiful Chloe died yesterday morning. She was my constant, faithful companion through some huge changes in my life. I will miss her more than I can say.

Ok, I deleted a previous post b/c it asked people in precarious positions to attest to their precarity. Instead I will say that I have, across 20+ years in higher ed & academic admin, consistently been asked to violate my ethical principles. I don’t know how to make it change. I’m sad.

My beloved made me coconut salmon with green beans, corn, and tomatoes for my 50th birthday. I love him. I love my children, I almost always love my work, and I always, always love being alive. I am so glad I never gave up on this life and made it here. I am overwhelmed by the goodness of right now.
