Trademark extortion scheme alert! 2nd example I've seen of identical email, tho sent out w/ different names/addresses/company names. Goal is to scare writers into responding so they can be pressed to pay big $$$ to "preserve their rights". Needless to say, this is not how trademark or copyright work

So I just got an email from someone offering to buy my claims in the Anthropic case, and whew are the vultures ever circling overhead.

The fairness hearing in Bartz v. Anthropic took place this afternoon, Thursday, May 14, 2026. The hearing addressed approval of the $1.5 billion class action settlement, Class Counsel’s fee request, and the objections and replies filed by class members and others. Our observations are below:

This is likely a scam--lots of warning signs (no meaningful "about" info, no way to submit listings, the cold call itself). The offer of addition to the "catalog" is bait, authors who say "yes" then become targets for sales pressure (such as the "smart bookstubs" touted on the site)

Update as of April 26. Writers have begun to receive emails from the Anthropic Settlement Administrator asking if they share a copyright interest in a particular work.

Yikes. But I'd still encourage everyone who's eligible to file a claim (print everything out and take screenshots that show the date). You have until midnight tonight.

Filing an Anthropic claim? You have until the post office closes to mail your claim form or 11:59 PM Pacific to upload it. Even if you can't make heads or tails out of the form, fill out as much as you can, especially the titles and Copyright Registration number, and submit it.

The Nebula Awards rules were amended as soon as members found out about the recent changes and complained. SFWA rules now say works created either wholly or in part are not eligible for the awards. Spread the word!

The Anthropic plaintiffs' attorneys have filed a motion for attorneys' fees asking for 20% of the $1,500,000,000 settlement amount. Taken together with some other charges including paying each of the authors who are being represented $50,000, the total amount they're asking for is $319,149,421.75.
