I’m really puzzled. We have just installed a twin 7kW Vaillant cascade with 500L cylinder in a substantial London home. What’s odd is the amount of energy used to heat hot water each day. Today in two sessions the Vaillant app reports 64kWh of hot water provided, or 230MJ.

BOOM❗ The UK heat pump had a bumper year with 63% market growth. Still a long way to go but if maintained in future years the UK would meet its 600,000 heat pumps installed per year in 2028 target.

As the climate data for 2024 continues to arrive, I've updated my graphic showing changes in various climate indicators for the recent past, and the last 2000 years. Most notable change is a big jump for tropospheric temperatures (TLT) in 2024. [Sea level and land humidity data not yet available.]

@energysmartwv.bsky.social Do you have data for frequency of defrosts as ambient temp drops below 0°C in damp climate? We have high humidity in winter in U.K. and during recent cold snap (-2 — -5°C) output of heat pumps dropped lower than the published data predicted, with defrosts every 45 mins?

Our heat pump was making a slightly irritating rasping noise yesterday. On investigation I noticed that the fan blades had a thin layer of ice on them. I melted that off with a hair drier and it immediately quietened back down to its wisher quiet normal self.
