Chicano Printmaking’s Radical Legacy Comes to The Huntington Chicano printmakers who mobilized farmworkers, opposed war, and reclaimed cultural identity through bold graphic art have largely been written out of American art history. Now, The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens is correcting that erasure with “Radical Histories: Chicano Prints from the Smithsonian American Art Museum,” running through March 2. The exhibition showcases 60 works by approximately 40 artists and collectives spanning more than six decades of printmaking as a weapon for resistance and community building. Christina Nielsen, the Hannah and Russel Kully Director of the Art Museum at The Huntington, said the institution had spent years preparing for this moment. The works are arranged in five thematic galleries: “Together We Fight” documents the United Farm Workers movement, while “¡Guerra No!” examines antiwar resistance. “Violent Divisions” explores the U.S.—Mexico border, “Rethinking América” reimagines social landscapes, and “Changemakers” celebrates political prisoners, activist leaders and artists who challenged the status quo. The Huntington offers 25—minute bilingual tours in Spanish and English.
