In an effort to avoid becoming the next Big Tobacco, according to previous reporting, the oil lobby is hoping to stomp out lawsuits that could result in massive damages, unearth private company documents, and in some cases dramatically alter their marketing practices, before they reach trial.

Home insurance rates are up, and Big Oil should pay. If the people of Hawai’i are left to bear the costs of climate disasters, "then we should allow the attorney general’s office to go and seek reimbursement from the companies that [are causing] these disasters,” said Senator Jarrett Keohokalole.

“These proposals are clearly part of a larger coordinated effort to strip communities and states of their right to hold Big Oil accountable,” said CCI's Richard Wiles. “If you have not violated the law, there is no reason to seek immunity.”

The climate crisis is an affordability issue. One thing we can do to alleviate the pain on households is stop letting the bill for climate damages fall on taxpayers and instead make Big Oil companies pay for the harm they've caused.

Big Oil just said the quiet part out loud. The American Petroleum Institute, the nation’s largest oil and gas trade association, said this week that one of its top 2026 priorities is to stop “state climate lawsuits.”

“If these cases are as frivolous as the oil companies’ briefs pretend, then why in the world are you busting your butt to get a declaration of immunity from Congress?”
