Arthropleura, the largest known arthropod to ever exist at an estimated 2.5 metres long, walks slowly along an ancient Carboniferous coastline looking for food.

How do you like 𝘛𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘪 (Etheridge, 1877) from the lower Carboniferous Glencartholm volcanic beds of East Lothian? 🦐 Whilst on first impression it looks to be a shrimp, it’s actually a member of the Peracarida and therefore more closely related to isopods than to decapods!

Baltic isopods. Did this for pollinator week last year, a study showed that this species of aquatic isopod helps certain kinds of seagrass spread, making them one of the first known underwater pollinators!
