The term ‘material culture’ was first used in 1843 and lay central to archaeological method. It was linked to the rise of cultural anthropology and comparative cultural analysis. The earliest methods decontextualised objects (think systemised display of artefacts in Museums).

Great article by Stephanie C. Martin on material culture on migration journeys. Archeological lenses, like this provide an substantial approach to migrations and their conditions; an extension of purely narrative-centered approaches and also inspiring for ethnographic research.
