Larian's CEO says they "don't see it as a replacement for developers". How?? If you're using AI to generate ANY artwork, even internally, that's replacing human labour. You can't claim to not be replacing anyone when you're using a tool that's literally doing the work of an artist. Gross.

So, “Order of the Sinking Star” by Thekla was just announced, which takes several small free games (two of which are mine) and gives them a major graphical upgrade and mashes up their rulesets. I haven’t been very involved but it’s a great concept and looks cool.

Sorry I think using AI for placeholders is also bad ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I know you only care about finished art but placeholder art also needs to be made by a human being who also needs to be paid for that But placeholder midjourney slop cuts that artist out

Besides the obvious reasons for disliking Gen AI, here’s a personal one: I’m scared it’s going to ruin my enjoyment of Game UI. Art used to inspire me - now my first thought is to question whether it’s real or not. If that ever happens with Game UI, it would break my heart.

Yikes, a 'BAFTA nominated' composer is sending *free* work to the studio I contracted with recently, asking to use their music instead. Not only is this incredibly rude, it completely undervalues the field. Is this a composer thing? Can't say this has ever happened before with my UI work! 😅

This isn't even subtle. All it tells us is that the game was sloppily made without any attention to detail. A literal cash grab, with zero passion, direction or effort. If you can't even be bothered to create your own cover art, why should we bother playing what it’s advertising? Gross.

Random thought, but it’s so upsetting to see how many senior/experienced members of our industry are desperately trying to stay relevant on LinkedIn by indulging toxic fads like Gen AI and NFTs, while younger members with more to lose are the ones speaking up and fighting for our industry and peers.

Don't think I've ever said this outright before, but the Game UI Database is NOT driven by AI. All 60,000+ screenshots were tagged BY HAND by myself over the last four years. Every screen type, every filter - even the colours! When you're passionate about the quality of your work, you don't need AI.
