i feel this tendency equally, not just because i’m a solo parent of a 3yo & my partner can’t get out of bed and needs structural care, but also because the costs (in more ways than financial) no longer obviously outweigh the opportunities. shooting my shot from home is almost (!) as effective.

i really believe indie game devs can only ‘innovate’ if there’s ample opportunity for their experiments to generate a sustainable income. we all know the ability to generate that income is increasingly at risk, yet stores & platforms never seem to understand & take their responsibility in this

after releasing 10 games in 15 years, “games market analysis” is getting increasingly tiring. i don’t trust it, i rarely learn anything useful for my business, and it distracts from focusing on the things i love. i want to be comfortably sustainable -not- following trends or ‘doing it like they did’

I only learned recently that downloading the Godot editor compiled with changes from specific PRs is extremely easy! Go to the PR, then to the Checks tab, and download the editor for your platform from the Artifacts dropdown! (A few more notes on that in this thread…) #godotengine

Made time to review Godot pull requests for the Usability team today! - Reviewed ~40 PRs. - Closed 2 no longer relevant PRs. - Downloaded the editor from PRs ~20 times. - Compiled the editor from PRs 2 times. - Approved ~10 PRs. - 4 PRs got merged today partly b/c of my approval. 💙 #godotengine

in 15 years, i’ve never and will never work with a company I’ve never heard of offering their services over a cold email. publishing, marketing, ads, audio, etc. whenever i see a peer ask ‘i got an email from [**], anyone worked with them?’ even the mere consideration sends shivers down my spine!!

Godot's GitHub has increasingly many pull requests generated by LLMs and it's a MASSIVE time waster for reviewers – especially if people don't disclose it. Changes often make no sense, descriptions are extremely verbose, users don't understand their own changes… It's a total shitshow. #godotengine

I’d add; this beautifully illustrates the development ethos “make it in a week, finish it in a year”. it’s maybe even a better tool for prioritization than “make it good later” because 1) you may not know what makes the thing ‘good’ and 2) the good thing should probably be part of the small thing?!

I was accepted into the usability team for the Godot editor and I just did my first "real" approval of a pull request for the Godot Engine!!!! very exciting, and very happy to contribute. the usability team is the only team I can join as I've never written a line of C++ in my life 🤣 #godotengine

TL;DR Unity -> Godot transition: after 13 years in unity, it took me 4-6 weeks of getting adjusted, and now i’ll never go back. it has quirks, like other engines. there’s bugs. but it’s free, basically equally capable, and well reported issues get fixed quicker than in unity (sometimes within hours)

got an email from a store rep telling me they'd like to feature Rift Riff but won't; because they "can not find" the store badge they designed on our site. gross strong-arm tactics to turn every game landing page into a boring display of black & white badges REALLY get under my skin 👎🏼 #gamedev

👇🏼 hard agree. i wish more devs trusted in the affordances of making multiplatform games. it takes time setting up UIs for different screen orientations, different UI scales, different input types, localization — but in return you get: • improved accessibility • more opportunities for $$$ #gamedev

👇🏼 event in Amsterdam where you can play new & upcoming indie games. i really loved attending the previous editions (and showcased there too once (twice?)). it’s small and casual and not too busy. i just got a ticket for €8 which is genuinely too cheap.

when my 3yo hugs me and says “mijn papaatje”, i am so flooded with love it’s hard to care about anything else right there and then. but moments later, that love radiates into the rest of my life; to aspire to be kind to myself and others, to make art, to be a friend, to listen, to care.
