Hundreds of Atlantans have gathered in Kirkwood to hold a vigil for Alex Pretti, the nurse who was killed by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis Saturday.

Dec. 30, 2025, was a busy day for Cop City-related court battles, with two rulings issued in Fulton County and a motion to dismiss filed in DeKalb.

The City of Atlanta successfully severed itself from a civil lawsuit against it and former APD officer, Anthony Anderson, who sexually assaulted a minor while working an off-duty job. A federal judge dismissed claims against the city found the city was not liable for Anderson's actions.

Located in Walton County, 45 minutes east of Atlanta, Social Circle is home to just 5,400 residents. This facility would detain up to 10,000 adult and child migrants awaiting deportation—double the population of the city itself.

A decades-old precedent by Georgia’s Supreme Court doomed the 2023 referendum petition to put the controversial $110 million police and fire training center known as “Cop City” on the ballot.

"Even if their petition is ultimately rejected on Kemp grounds, that is, the plaintiffs may well think: The effort was worth it—we made our voices heard, we got our message out, we planted the seed," Newsom wrote. "That, it seems to me, is wheelhouse First Amendment stuff."

A panel of federal appeals court judges ruled that the Cop City petition will not move forward. The majority opinion overturned a lower court ruling in favor of the plaintiffs. The written opinion states that petitions cannot be used to challenge a city ordinance in the State of Georgia.

Yaa'kub Vijandre, 38, is detained in Georgia’s Folkston detention center and accused of “glorifying terrorism”—due to a handful of social media posts, several of which refer to his Muslim faith. His attorneys argue his detention is unconstitutional, violating First Amendment speech protections.

A federal judge has permanently blocked Georgia from enforcing a state law that banned hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for transgender people in state prisons, ruling the policy unconstitutional.

"Historically, the TADs here in Atlanta have left a lot of people out, and they’ve just been drivers for gentrification," said Matthew Nursey, of the Housing Justice League.
