watching the CECOT 60 Minutes segment that CBS suppressed, it’s striking that Weiss specifically called out as unnecessary some of the most rigorous investigative work in the segment, including an explanation of how it was done (by human rights researchers)

Truth. Gov’t pre-clearance is the exact opposite of having a “free Press“ end up holding democracy. By the way, I saw a consulting report recently about journalism that advised us not to use the words “democracy” and “journalism” in support appeals. What next: “free press” and “first amendment”?

If govt or others won’t respond and you have the evidence, good newsrooms run with it. Otherwise, you’re bowing to an old censorship tool. 1st Amendment exists for us to hold power, and especially the government supposedly of the people, to account. Weiss uses moniker “Free Press” for opposite.

What serious person thought he would. He wears who he is on his sleeve and through his mentors and friend group. Why do Americans (and our media) have to epitomize starry-eyed disbelief about what is in front of our damn eyes? Willful naïveté got us here to the gate.

BTW, NYT, this is decidedly not “refusing to take a side over bigotry.”

This is the NYT version of that same news report in my last repost. And some (not as many as in the past) can still be surprised that we have refused to work with such an enabling organization. That’s the nicest description I can conjure this morning. Support indeed truly independent media now.

I’ve never apologized for being white. I also don’t work to cover for the horrors that white supremacist bigots and terrorists have committed due to their, um, pride in this skin tone. This fella needs to figure out the difference because we’re moving backward fast here.

What once was largely limited to Stormfront and the fever swamps of the internet just a few years ago is now accepted discourse from the White House.

Bari Weiss probably could have gotten away with glazing the regime in facially benign ways (e.g. the Erika Kirk obsession) but cancelling stories is the one thing you can't get away with because it threatens the most important thing to journalists: attention
