This week I've had two people ask me if I speak Greek. They were very nice about it. But it got me thinking, who claims heritage and can't speak the language? I understand if the language is dead, but if you're claiming you belong to a culture, you should be able to communicate in that language 🤷‍♀️

The native language of my family is Arvanitika. It was spoken, not written. During hellenization in the 1900s there was a big push by the Greek state against it. Baba spoke it with his cousins. Mama never learned. I wonder how much knowledge, especially of folk traditions, we lost in one generation.

Someday when I'm gone, I'm going to come back as a ghost. Not to scare anyone but to hang out with people who feel alone. Float around and try to bring them some ghostly comfort. 👻
