My take after 35 years as a public and private sector researcher, consultant, and advisor: Scholarship is hard; translating it into understandable and actionable policy support is in many ways harder. Also more rewarding and requiring a different (don't call it "soft") skillset. Give it a try!

Certainly there is no formula for scientific method and I agree no critique can be purely procedural. Sometimes the open science mvnt doesn’t get that. Effective critique shows violations of norms of trust, those cannot be justified by appeal to personal judgment.
