Don’t get hung up on the first draft. It took me forever to finish my first draft of my first book because I kept trying for perfection the first time, and it’s flatly not possible. Let yourself do it badly. You can always make it better later. #HiveMentor

I’m not a good fit for military sci fi or for sword and sorcery fantasy, though I’m open to adjacent genres. I’m probably going to pass on stories about angels or demons. Sexual assault on page is an automatic no from me. #HiveMentor

I’m keeping an open mind about what type of story I’m looking for, but I definitely want a mentee who has thought deeply about their manuscript. For little things that tend to catch my eye: queer stories and stories about people with complicated familial relationships! #HiveMentor

Oh my gosh, so many. The most recent was Charlene Thomas’s STREETLIGHT PEOPLE, which has all the character work I loved in her debut with an additional speculative twist! In adult, Hester Steel’s THE FACELESS THING WE ADORE lives rent free in my brain. #HiveMentor

My favorite book tends to be whatever I'm currently reading, and right now that's The Garden by Nick Newman. I'm really enjoying the sibling relationship at its center, their playfulness & warmth amidst such a grim world. #HiveMentor

#HiveMentor Bold of you to assume that I have read for fitness and for fun this year with all of *gestures wildly* going on. I'm going to call out two books I really liked: Tempered in Ash by Willo Glenn and An Ambitious Woman and Her Very Normal Pet by Lily Greene. Both are worth your read.

My style involves questions! The most important thing for me is making my mentee’s book the most *that book* it can be, so I will be asking about intentions. I don’t want to take apart what works, but I want to hone what’s there (which isn’t to say no rewrites, just intentional ones) #HiveMentor
