I found a Knot in the misery and drizzle this morning, at Deeping Lakes LWT, Lincs (seems typical weather for these scarce inland wanderers to drop in around the Peterborough area). A year tick for me, I think it is the first we have had locally, this year. @lincsbirding.bsky.social

At Deeping Lakes LWT, Lincs, this morning I heard the 'gok gok gok gok' call of Bittern and prepared to walk from the east screen of the east pit to see if I could see it. Then I realised it had come out onto one of the nearby islands. Unfortunately, it also saw me... Check out the huge claws!

Classic early autumn scene for the Peterborough area: female Redstart in a Hawthorn bush. Near Markey Deeping, Lincs, this morning (a bird I found yesterday morning, but was still there today). @lincsbirding.bsky.social

One of perhaps half a dozen Clouded Yellows whizzing around the meadows near Milton Airstrip, near Ailsworth, Cambs this lunchtime (also a female Redstart and at least one Whinchat seen). It had become cloudy, and this butterfly was trying to catch some rays to warm up before another feed.

I think these curlew #linocut prints are done. I just added a layer of a slightly darker pinky-purply-brown, and they’re looking good! I wasn’t sure if I’d need a final dark layer on the curlew but I think it works well without it. Now I just need to wait for them to dry…

I spent many hours waiting for a Purple Heron to appear at March Farmers (Nene Washes), on Saturday. No show. Had a few nice Bittern fly-bys though. This is the best I could come up with. @cambsbirdclub.bsky.social

Small Red-eyed Damselfly. I am old enough to remember when they used to be very scarce dragonflies in Peterborough and its environs (first found in 2006 in P'boro. I think). Now, we live in a different age. This was one of many on one of the pits of the Baston & Langtoft pits complex, S Lincs.

Reed Warbler with a beakful to feed its young in the nest (second brood?). A closer look shows that there appear to be a high proportion of hoverflies in the bill.

If you were to lie a Little Ringed Plover on its back, bill lying flat, the length between bill tip to tail tip is 15.5-18cm (c6-8 inches), smaller than a Starling. Look how small these baby LRPS are (near their parent)! So cute! #UKBirding @lincsbirding.bsky.social @justwildimages.bsky.social

Female Norfolk Hawker (aka Green-eyed Hawker) laying eggs low in vegetation in a ditch in south Lincolnshire.

I found a beautiful Lesser Stag Beetle on the top of a nettle at Deeping Lakes LWT, Lincs, this evening. Then I realised that it had laboriously climbed up there in order to take flight, something I had never seen before. First it opened the elytra, then unfolded the wings, then full spread and off.

Norfolk Hawker, Thorpe Meadows (Nene), Peterborough. A first for me in Cambs. This beautiful dragonfly species is spreading fast, it seems.

Male Scarce Chaser dragonflies, Thorpe Meadows, Peterborough. I enjoyed the irony of 'scarce' when these were the commonest Anisoptera today, so common, that two males even shared a perch.

It is disgraceful the way Chris Packham has been lambasted by the pro-shooting community over the years. That said, his clumsy forcing of song titles from naff 'Britpop' bollocks bands on Springwatch makes me think those who wish to defund the BBC have something of a point. It has ruined the series.

I photographed this oil beetle on the path along the raised grassy bank of the River Glen (beside Baston Fen LWT) on 4 May. I think it is a female Black Oil Beetle, unless anyone knows better.
