In clinical health psychology, we're trying to support people with chronic health conditions to manage, to grieve, to navigate chaotic systems, to get the help they need. We're absolutely not 'psychologising' distress. So many people are harmed by the idea that their distress is 'all psychological'.

Hi, thanks. Unfortunately it is used in that way, & is invalidating & causes harm. People who come to see us may need to grieve, to vent- but sometimes what's needed is pain relief, a medical appt, housing, a better employer. The distress is very real but these are not 'psychological problems'.

Saw a golden eagle today, I think. Sadly the camera don’t have a charged battery 🙄 so no photos - phone wasn’t going to cut it!

Genuine connections can't be manufactured. If you try to make them happen step-by-step, then they'll feel contrived, as if set up only for a specific use. Yet, you can't take relationships for granted. They take care and attention, a subtle balance of reciprocity and generosity.

I hear a lot of talk & promotion about the importance of the 'human side' of healthcare- eg valuing relationships, engagement, listening etc. And ofc this is welcome. But the key thing is to model more human ways- to actually practice in these ways. Otherwise it's just empty words isnt it?

Still watching The Pitt. Season 2 features a chap who is rationing his insulin, and not testing his blood glucose because he can't afford the insulin or the testing strips. His insurance came from his employer, and he lost his job. It is a ridiculous system you folks have in the US. Sorry, folks.

It's so complex working in the NHS- what makes most difference is having a good lead/supervisor. Someone who is there when you need them but also gives you space & encouragenent to think & grow. Someone who knows you over time & cares. This matters so much & I wish everyone had this kind of support.

1. Politics affects health care. (Compare provision and access in USA vs most of Europe) 2. Politics profoundly affects social determinate of health - poverty, crowding, pollution, smoking etc. So absolutely a place for political views. But not to let that influence care for an individual patient

Going to a wedding next month. No idea what to wear. Bought a dress on Vinted but I’m too fat. I wear dresses like this for work- smart enough for a wedding? Imagine it in big size and a bit stretched- it’s jersey and I’m quite lumpy!

This is so powerful and reflects what continuity with a GP means. It rings true as both a doctor (not my specialty but we have more depth of input than many specialties which gives some of these moments) but even more so as a patient in a practice with good continuity and compassionate care
