Earlier this year I learned that, in rare cases, Cedar Waxwings have wax on the tips of their tail feathers (the typical place is on the wing tips.) I was delighted to recently find another Cedar Waxwing that had a couple of red waxy tips on the tail feathers.

having written about how banning web scrapers from a code forge i host made it usable again and saved ~60€/y in power bill, let me tell you: you cannot fathom the offloaded cost of GenAI on small web hosts. it is a veritable distributed denial of service to the entire web. Every web admin sees it.

The last three books about the Choctaw language & culture that I've bought have *ALL* turned out to be just AI-generated junk🤬 It's genuinely infuriating to see this careless nonsense happening, as it dilutes the actual language and culture and makes it harder for me to learn about my own humanity

Alysa Liu telling 60 Minutes “I love struggling, it makes me feel alive” is a legit revolutionary statement from a Bay Area native in a time when copious amounts of time and resources are being put toward convincing us to opt out of experiencing struggle, friction and self-actualization

I don't usually post about this, but... it's my birthday!! And for my birthday, you should check out what I finished this week after months of work: a HUGE commemorative piece to celebrate our 1st D&D campaign! It's the most ambitious single piece I've ever attempted. I can't wait to frame it!!

Just attended the coldest wedding ever last night (in an old historic building to boot!) it was -35°C out. Also my poor buddy slipped and fell 48 hours before his wedding day! He was a trooper and still made it on time to the ceremony!

Italian voice actor Carlo Bononi was the voice of all of the characters on Pingu. A trained clown by trade, he used a theater technique called grammelot, which consists of "speaking" in a mix of babbled gibberish noises. He improvised all the voices live and unscripted.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

For over a decade I have tied my shoes one specific way: Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot. I learned it from Ian (aka Professor Shoelace) whose site is over two decades old. The knot has never failed me. I spoke with Ian about knots and the dangers of the modern internet.

Ian's Is Still The Best Site For Tying Your Shoelaces
Ian's Shoelace Site has been teaching people to tie their shoes for more than two decades. His knots are wonderful. But it is vulnerable to the forces tearing the internet apart.

I've been running an indie games studio for 15 years now, and it felt like a good time to boil down what I've learned into 4 pieces of advice:

I hope it's of use, not least because goddamn I forgot how long blog posts take to write.
