I was walking on the DTM last week and was struck by the fountain being completely chained off and how it just adds to the feeling that “no one is welcome here”! For no reason!!!!!

Activism works. After widespread outrage at a draft ordinance (released over a a holiday weekend) that would criminalize being homeless, Charlottesville City Council voted unanimously to table it. Kudos to @livablecville.bsky.social for organizing against it!

I set a reminder to send a note about this first thing tomorrow morning. (Join me!) Criminalizing sleeping outside doesn't give someone a safe place to go. We can do better than this!

As someone who visits Charlottesville annually for pleasure and spends a lot of time on the downtown mall, I have exactly 0 issues with the various unhoused people I see there. It's a public space and they're part of the public. If Cville doesn't want people camping they should provide housing.

You know what to do, Cvillians!

The (proposed) ordinance is VERY bad. It goes beyond criminalizing "camping" or "sleeping"; it also makes it a crime for a homeless person to have any personal property that's not in their immediate possession and authorizes CPD to destroy it. Cruel, unhelpful, probably unconstitutional.
