Architect, husband & dad, lives in Charlottesville. Bikes for fun and for transport.
pinned post!
I need to update my post now that my oldest is headed off to college this fall, I'll have only 2 of my kids in public schools. The rest still tracks, my wife is awesome as ever and local politics continues to be the place where one can effect the most tangible changes.

Funny how it's the youngest kid moving up that brings home the sense of kids growing up. Almost done with the last year of middle school 😭

Another point in favor of motor electrification, no need for engine oil. (I mean motors expansively, small engines, motorbikes, etc, not just cars)

Attending three track meets in the span of 4 days is a bit much! (2 middle school meets and one high school meet.) Very glad my youngest will be in high school next year so he and middle kid will have the same schedule.

Bike month in Charlottesville: The City of Wishful Thinking, where great bike infrastructure exists if you just believe hard enough and talk about it a lot. No actual changes needed.

I've planted a bunch of persimmon and the last few pawpaws we had in a patch at the end of my yard (had to rip up that invasive periwinkle anyway) so between that and numerous friends picking up seedlings, we've made a good dent. However there are still many persimmon and a few buttonbush left

It's very frustrating living in a country where the Republicans are given a free pass by the courts and by the media to do whatever deranged dangerous bugfuck batshit they want, but when Democrats make any change at all, the media hamstrings them and then the courts brain them with a cinder block.

So many people were content with this county when it was being underinvested in. Welp. Now you have to deal with the realities that you created. A lot of us don’t want to live in a county designed by 70 year olds for 70 year olds.

Native tree alert! 🌿 Through a miscommunication, we have 2 bundles instead of 2 saplings each of 3 types of native plants, parsimmon, button bush, and pawpaw. This is meant for anyone who wants to plant them so if you're in Charlottesville and have a place to plant these, hit me up (dm for address)

At the UVA track this morning for a big high school meet. CHS parents are volunteering at the shot put, which is right next to the discus throwers. (Not to worry, picture taken through heavy netting)

i write about white supremacist violence for a living. i’ve been writing a lot lately about white supremacist violence during the years of the civil rights movement and placing these things in context together has really changed the way i understand that history.

This! "Environmentalism" is not saving the tree you personally can see out your window! Building more infill housing is better for a warming planet, and decreases sprawl, which preserves more intact wildlife habitat.

💥Before Hungary's election, Viktor Orbán labeled me a "Ukrainian spy" for exposing FM Péter Szijjártó's collusion with Sergey Lavrov, then his government filed criminal charges against me. Hungarian police have now dropped the case – for lack of any supporting evidence.🤷♂️

this is the same woman who went crying to the police when someone knocked her phone out of her hand because she wouldn’t stop filming the bleeding victims of the charlottesville car attack. on the scene of a mass casualty incident, feet away from a woman’s dead body, it was all about her.

We have discovered, yet again, that pedestrianization *raises* traffic to stores & *boosts* sales. All the fear-mongering was baseless! I'm sure this time the lesson will stick & the *next* group of merchants around the *next* proposed pedestrian street won't raise a bunch of nonsense objections!

Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.
