recently i was pouring through nier artbooks hoping to see rough designs for the environments but they're more interested in characters. to me there's a very stagey, illustrative quality to the small villages in nier that feels very mindful. the aerie can surely only exist because it was painted

i feel og nier is fantastic at this in general, but the colour choices really allow it to maintain a visual hierarchy i find very pleasing. its an almost illustrative approach to world design where the distant bridge is clear and legible but functions more as framing than a focal point.
