Courtrooms across the nation are increasingly relying on algorithms to predict outcomes for people accused of crimes, using these tools to help judges and magistrates make pretrial decisions.

As we fight to end the pretrial detention system, we must also fight to dismantle the migrant detention system. Jails and detention centers have become virtually interchangeable. For many migrants, racist policing and incarceration are often their first points of contact with the State.

Of all the reasons people get sent to jail, forgetting an appointment has to be among the least justifiable. Yet, each year, 1 million jail bookings involve people facing failure to appear (FTA) charges. Shuffling people into the system for missing court does not keep us safe🧵

New census data shows that poverty stayed high last year—and increased for black women. Nearly 2 in 5 working-age women living in poverty had jobs. This is a policy choice. October is dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of mental health in our communities. Our Black mamas and caregivers are often met with bias, misdiagnosis, and distrust when seeking mental health support.

"Cell phone images smuggled out of jails and prisons across the country reveal food that hardly looks edible, let alone nutritious. ...kitchen workers at prisons in Arizona, Oregon, and elsewhere reported seeing boxes of food that were served to prisoners marked: 'not for human consumption.'"

Black women deserve safety. We deserve to experience love, support, and care in our most intimate relationships. And yet, for Black women and girls, one of the leading causes of death is murder by an intimate partner.

Across the country, most people accused of crimes never have their day in court. Before any hearing of facts or presentation of evidence, an overwhelming majority of people plead guilty.

The systems used to dispossess, oppress, and control Black communities did not end with chattel slavery, convict leasing, and Jim Crow. We have seen firsthand how the current system recycles its tactics, traditions, policies, and practices.

"Like many of the Black mamas and caregivers we’ve supported, JaCari was never convicted of a crime. But she was still expected to sit in jail for FOUR YEARS simply because she couldn’t afford her bail. How is that justice? How is that making our communities safer?"

Marissa Potts was 23 weeks pregnant when she was arrested in Dec. 2021. “I spent many nights gulping water to stave off hunger, the sound of my grumbling stomach a lullaby to my unborn baby,” she details in an op-ed. Behind bars, pregnant women are ignored at best, abused & traumatized at worst.
