"We dance round in a ring and suppose, But the Secret sits in the middle and knows."
For the last week or so, I have been waking--unprompted--between six and six-thirty AM. I DO NOT LIKE IT. It's not a traumatic waking, and it appears unlinked to when I actually go to sleep. As a lifelong morning-hater, I find it deeply upsetting. Even if it allows cat cuddle time.

While chatting during gaming, I was just reminded about how many children's books were absolutely horrifying. Not in the sense that they were meant to be "horror", but man. Black Beauty? The Fox and the Hound? Bambi? And, of course, Where the Red Fern Grows.

The world’s largest sand battery got through Finland’s harshest winter in years. 2,000 tonnes of sand, heated to 500-600°C by cheap power, feeding district heating in Pornainen. And it worked. Result from one install: oil down 100%, emissions down 70%. Industrial process heat is the real prize.

People prefer to use “sycophantic” AI systems that reinforce their pre-existing beliefs. In a new paper (n=7,227), we found that people enjoyed interacting with sycophantic AI chatbots more than interacting with neutral chatbots or “disagreeable” chatbots that challenged their beliefs.

Something poking up from my skin. A hair? I pluck it. It doesn't resist like a hair. It slides free so easily, curls on my skin. Dying? The next day, there are ten in the same spot. They writhe when I pull, and they are longer. They go deeper. They are wet with blood. Today, I bristle with them.

I don't think people with cats work as horror protagonists. We just don't have the startle reflext. Mysterious crash from an empty room? Cat. Something touching you in the dead of night? Cat. Glowing eyes seven feet up in the impenetrable dark? Cat. Or demon. That last could be a demon.

Tonkatsu! Not at all authentic, but I flattened out a portion of pork tenderloin, seasoned it, coated it in panko, fried it up, and even made some terribly nonauthentic tonkatsu sauce, and it made for a very tasty and fast dinner.

PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is now PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome). The name change follows a multiyear process stemming from a recognition that ovarian cysts aren't the primary aspect of the condition, which affects multiple body systems, and many patients don't have them.

In every academic book there is a secret second book hiding in the footnotes. Sometimes it is the first draft that had migrated there to escape the revisions. Sometimes it is the author's tortured secret rebuttal of their own claims, and sometimes it is the incipient form of the their next book.

There's nothing wrong with having a kink, but please don't blame this on us women! I cannot say I've ever had any preference for testicle size. There probably are women who are into that, but I'd be real REAL surprised if it was even top 10 factor for most women??
