Campus communities should be walkable and affordable. That means building more, denser housing near colleges and universities around the state.

So much affordable housing development is reliant on federal funding, but California can’t depend on DC for a steady stream of funds anymore. To make campus communities affordable for low income students, faculty, and staff without federal money, we need to remove barriers to building.

When rent is twice the cost of tuition and fees, making college affordable means making housing affordable.

Housing policy is education policy. If students can’t afford to live where they learn, they won’t be able to learn at all.
