When I started working on UK energy in 2007, fossil fuels provided ~78% of electricity. Coal alone: 34%. Wind & solar: less than 2%. Today: wind & solar 33%, fossil fuels 28%, coal 0%. The chart below tells the story better than words can.

Summer is an ideal time for heating engineers to install heat pumps (fewer boilers to fix). If the oil crisis subsides by winter, no regrets, you got a load more heat pumps. And if it doesn’t, you’ve reduced the need for subsidy and destroyed some oil demand. Seems… worth doing?

Heat pumps are the most efficient heating technology ever invented. They harvest and compress pre existing heat in the air, ground or water and transport it where it is needed. That energy is all around us. It does not have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz or any other geopolitical chokepoint.

What is your favourite lie about heat pumps? That they don't work in cold countries like Norway?

Heating oil prices in the UK have trebled in a week. 2 million homes, no price cap protection, no warning. Heat pumps + solar are multiple times more efficient, don’t require an oil tank and oil deliveries and are an insurance against such frightening price spikes.

Roughly 15 million new cars are sold in the USA every year, roughly 2 million in UK. The majority are petrol/diesel/hybrid. Many more *could* be BEVs (pure electric). For most people who can charge at home and don't tow, it's not just easy to live with a BEV, it's better than a petrol/diesel/hybrid.

One way in which a 2026 energy crisis* might be different to 2022: it would likely affect oil as well as gas. In 2022, the main issue was gas, which mainly affected electricity and heating bills. If oil spikes as well, expect transport and more industrial production to face problems
