Scotland could be one of the richest countries right now, but all of that wealth from renewables is going outwith the country. Scottish Wind, for example, is headquartered in Spain! We've got to make sure that all of our renewables are actually building wealth for Scotland.

As recently as the 2014 independence referendum, oil was the lead economic subject in debates over the constitution. In recent years oil has mutated into a regional interest and jobs issue instead of a major macroeconomic one. That’s a major political outcome of North Sea decline. 🧵

We have to be real here about what we want the future economy of Scotland to look like. Do we want an economy that puts workers and communities first with a real just transition? Or do we want an economy that's just several oil and gas companies in a trench coat?

Which one do you want on the hills around where you live? Scotland should be a leader in community and municipally owned energy, but we've been left behind the rest of Europe.

We need to talk about what's happening in the Inner Hebrides. Iberdrola's proposed MachairWind development isn't just another windfarm. It's an industrial project on a scale we've never seen here. 91 turbines, 340m tall. Big enough to cover 50% of Mull's landmass, 64% of Islay. Let that sink in.

Now imagine what it would be like if our communities owned all of those spinning turbines on a day like today. Imagine the community wealth fund getting topped up every time it was blowing a hoolie?

Do you know what happens to wind turbines when they’re reaching the end of their lifecycle? Repowering. Repowering is the process of upgrading or replacing turbines with more efficient and productive technology. It could also be the secret to shifting ownership of renewables in Scotland!

Scotland's first generation of onshore wind is coming of age for repowering. A new report says that this could be the chance we need to shift ownership to communities rather than corporations.

Kristopher Leask, the @scottishgreens.org MSP for Highlands and Islands has it right. Because of corporate ownership of renewables, hundreds of millions of pounds flow out of Scotland's economies into tax havens. How do we get that wealth back? community and council owned energy.

In Bornholm, Denmark they're proposing a 100MW offshore wind project that will be 100% owned by local residents and organisations. Meanwhile in Scotland, we're only getting at most £5000 from our corporate wind overlords.

Between 2019 and 2024, Scotland’s onshore wind sector made an estimated £5.6 billion in post-tax profits. £729 million of that went to companies owned by private equity or based in tax havens.

The same thing is happening right now with the massive wealth generated by our renewables. The Scottish government can act today and keep more of that wealth in Scotland with a bigger stake in offshore wind and more community and council owned renewables! We can't let the same thing happen again.

Huntly, Udny, Point and Sandwick, and Galson community-owned turbines showed an average income of £261,723 per MW per year, 100% of which went into the nearby community. That’s  52 times higher  than the recommended £5,000/MW per year for community benefit payments from commercial developers.

Community benefit funds are a dead end for Scotland. Developers and lairds make millions while our communities get next to nothing. This is why we need community and council owned energy. We should all be benefiting from renewables in Scotland!

🏭 Drax buys Bluefield Solar, adding £561 million to their portfolio. If the Scottish and UK governments did more to back community energy, that value you would be flowing into our communities. But, as it stands, it's all going into shareholder pockets. We've got to change this.

At the moment, places like Point and Sandwick Trust on Lewis are exceptions in our energy system. But community-energy should become the norm! We need community-ownership everywhere in Scotland.

A Small community in Denmark is planning a 100MW community-owned offshore wind farm. It will be the biggest community-owned wind farm in the world. This should be happening in Scotland!
