He/him. Old safety/QA person at quaint US Federal Laboratory. Emigre from the Bird Site.
Carville seems to have gotten terminally consultant-brained. I mean, the first thing I look for in a candidate is "are they mad about the same things I am?", and he's definitely mad. IDK, though--his anger comes across as inauthentic.

Two things can be true simultaneously: 1) What The Fig Economy said. People changing their minds to agree with you is a very good thing, and 2) Those people are not somehow automatically entitled to a position of leadership.

I do like Charles Stross' take on vampires in the Laundry series; basically, their victims die of something like prion disease, as extradimensional parasites take little bites out of their brains, but if the vampires don't feed the parasites will kill them.

That was the US strategy with Ukraine, and it's a good one up to a point. We should've given them more.

I'm convinced that it's the same mindset you see in premillenial dispensationalism--"I am *special*, and I will get to see the eternal victory of tech/God with my own eyes." Like the folks the OP writes about, PMDs ignore the history of their predecessors saying the same thing.

Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem about that, "The Peace of Dives." He wrote it in 1903. Less than ten years later, the onset of WW I proved him wrong.

Interesting article. One thing that struck me, though, is that the hypothetical 2029 D administration has to think of rebuilding government as similar to the reconstruction of Germany and Japan post-WWII.

let's be clear, let's be very clear, let's be incredibly clear about something: Marcia Lucas is why you love Star Wars. She's why Star Wars worked. She's why it has heart. She's responsible for the in-media-res beginning, she's responsible for basically everything charming and unique about >

Re last post, there are more and less appropriate ways it could've gone...thinking about the post I saw yesterday about how Biden should've disappeared Trump instead of relying on the justice system. And I'm going yeah, there's no possible way that would've come back to bite us.πππ

Listening to some...person on MSNOW talking about being cordial to the administration folks in attendance, and I was like...no. Those people do not deserve anything other than the cut direct, and if you don't think you can do that you shouldn't be there.

Pretty likely, but AIUI they only get one reconciliation bill per session. It has to be budget-related, so no SAVE bs, and it might not pass the House. ISTM that the Rs are taking a loss now in exchange for a future win that's not guaranteed.

This. The quality of JKR's writing is *irrelevant* in a discussion of how much harm she is doing and will continue to do with the money she makes from the new HP series. When you bring up your dislike for the franchise *in that discussion*, you center yourself, not the people who'll be harmed.

With the HP trailer dropping tomorrow, here's the whole deal: If you watch the show, hell even just the trailer, I will think less of you. I will dislike you. I will think you don't care about trans people. That's it. It's been years. There's no wiggle room. No qualifiers. You care or you don't.

On the drive to work this morning (western Joliet IL), gas at $4.30/gallon. It sure looks like Iran saw the way Ukraine was inflicting pain on RU via energy production attacks and said yeah, we can do that too.
