TL;DR: 5 justices say Trump doesn't have to immediately restore the funding, but 5 *also* signal that the underlying directives are unlawful. That sends a fairly strong (if mixed) message that Trump will lose these cases *eventually,* but only once they're brought in the Court of Federal Claims.

🚨 SCOTUS just issued a decision in the NIH grant termination cases. And it's awful. In plain English, the likely result of this is that SCOTUS just re-terminated ~900 NIH grants worth over $1.9 billion in unspent funds This is an atrocious decision by Justice Barrett & the right wing of the Court.

Been hearing folks don’t realize NIH is more than its internal labs. That cutting NIH is ok because Dana Farber will still do cancer research. Joslin will cover diabetes, etc. But these centers get most of their funding from NIH. Stop NIH, and the whole system fails, across the entire US.

This 🧵 shows the stark reality for one of the 27 institutes & centers that make up the NIH. The National Center for Complementary & Integrative Health (NCCIH) had a team of 35 employees managing operations & communication work. Now there are 3. THREE. An actual decimation. Its staggering.

They'll have to apply for a new visa midway through, after all of that work and risky sacrifice. At which point the US government can just say, "Nope, we're not letting you stay, and we don't have to give you a reason". Many—rightly risk-averse—will understand they're not wanted, and stay away.

The White House is taking new steps to undermine every international student at our universities. It has approved a new rule restricting student visas to 4 years max. That's not long enough for PhD students, or about half of undergrads, to finish their degree. Likely to enter force within days.

I’m a proud student of Bellevue, North Seattle and Golden West community colleges. I have been so lucky to be able to take CC classes with running start in high school and supplement my university coursework at CCs. They provide essential education and we should be expanding not limiting funding.
