I'd love to read more rambles. An example case study would be cool. You can translate a sentence 100 ways even with a dictionary but you need the sentences around to narrow down what ought be said, sometimes to something outside a dictionary. You can't look up the context/culture in a dictionary.

LRP and thread quoted are so true, as is the likening to J>E dicts to thesauruses. After a certain point you can instinctively grasp the nuance of a word in JP, but the exact word you're looking for in EN isn't in the J>E dict, even if they're all close. That's when I head to the E>E thesaurus!

Good thread. I regularly tell people to look up the word "go" in the English dictionary. www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/go it has 20 listed meanings as an intransitive verb, 9 as a transitive verb, and 9 as a noun... and then you get to the "phrases", such as "go after", go hang" or "go easy".
