Make no mistake. For Europe Russia's war against Ukraine was always a choice. At anytime since Putin came to power Europe could have limited Russia's aggression, but it chose not to. At anytime after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 Europe could have helped Ukraine to win, but it chose not to.

Almost 4 years into this full scale war and Russian tankers are now using NATO territorial waters in order to avoid being attacked by Ukrainian drones. You read that correctly. Russians hiding behind NATO, because they lost control of the Black Sea.

The US National Defense Strategy makes clear Europe will get less US military support in future, & must take "the lead in supporting Ukraine's defense". OTD in 2022 my parody embassy informed you that Russia has no plans to "attack" Ukraine. Which was sort of true. We had a plan. It was just really shit.

If this initiative suceeds, the role should go to an Eastern European - someone with firsthand and realistic understanding of Russia, particularly given how rarely Eastern Europeans get top NATO and EU jobs.
