I saw a comedian say: after 10 months, he hasn't figured out what "tariffs" are. Bottom line: US tariffs are essentially sales taxes on lower-income and retired Americans. The explicit goal+mechanism of tariffs is to force those people to pay more for the same products.

there’s a lot of talk about big tech and corporations but so many international academic colleagues are also on H1Bs. no university is going to pay 100k extra a year to keep them. if this holds, it would essentially mean the end of foreigners on tenure track jobs at US universities.

Three things made the US a rich and powerful nation: the rule of law, its science & innovation system, and openness to foreign talent. Remarkable how Trump has taken a sledgehammer to all three. No enemy of this country could do more.

Even established authoritarian regimes consider arresting defiant judges an extreme tactic—a serious escalation usually reserved for after one-party rule is firmly entrenched. Seeing a judge arrested in the US today should alarm everyone who values democratic governance. This cannot be allowed. 🧵

Reminders: "Concentration camps" aren't the same as "extermination camps." Both were/are horrific. Most Nazi camps were *outside Germany*, away from the eyes of German citizens. Those trains? Were to, uh, deport the category of people whose lives were deemed unimportant. Never again is now.

As Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs announcement tanks markets, remember: his billionaire supporters knew this was coming. They backed him anyway. They knowingly sacrificed our economic prosperity to protect their elaborate tax avoidance schemes and privileges—despite gaining 64.6% under Biden.

Trump says his tariffs will raise $6 trillion. Assuming that's over 10 years, that's $600 billion per year. There are 134 million households, so this is nearly $5,000 per household per year. And it's like a sales tax, so it's a flat tax. A huge hit to the budgets of working folks.
