I've been receiving a new kind of email lately: people who GPT has convinced to email professors in order to get their "deeply insightful" conversations w/ GPT published. It's a weird confluence of AI sycophancy + human loneliness and delusions of grandeur.

Usability is like security: if you don't design around it from the very start, when you try to patch it on, unless you get lucky, you'll discover all kinds of architectural commitments that make it really hard, and you'll always play catch-up.

I had two NSF grants terminated last week, for a total of just under $1M. The largest one had just started and its goal was to provide users with more context and information on the content that they see on social media.

Welp, my NSF grant in progress (about content moderation) was just abruptly canceled, effective today.

My NSF CS for All grant was just terminated (www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/...). Nationwide, we were: • Improving the quantity + quality of K-12 CS teachers • Ensuring the sustainability of K-12 CS teacher prep programs • Ensuring all youth in the U.S. have access to great CS teachers

The NYT wants you to think universities became dependent on government. This is false. The government invested in the national research infrastructure by competitive grants to universities. The taxpayers built this. It got us to the moon. Won the Cold War. Created Silicon Valley. Made the McRib.

Ironically, the foundational papers in many fields are more often on the relevance end of the spectrum than on the rigor end, because these papers usually define a new field. Thus, many foundational papers likely wouldn't get in to the big conferences of their fields if submitted today. (4/4)

This is commonly known as the "rigor-relevance" tradeoff / paradox / framework. To be highly rigorous, you necessarily have to reduce the scope of your work so you can have more control over the method and make more careful, strongly defensible claims. (1/4)
