For some reason, over the past few years the question of whether David 'raped' Bathsheba has repeatedly surfaced on social media, been the subject of heated disagreement, and then disappeared until the next Bathsheba season. I just produced a video on the subject.

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

Blows my mind that Tacitus’ Annals only survived thanks to a single manuscript. Or rather two. The only copy of the first half was saved in a monastery in Germany and the only copy of the second half was in Monte Cassino. That’s how fine the thread that links us to our history.

Arguing online across differences is one of my favourite things. However, you really need to have highly selective and well-moderated communities to do so—comments sections on thoughtful blogs with a diverse audience, email discussion lists, occasional subreddits, etc.

Part of the holiness of God means he is this particular God, the Holy One of Israel, who has acted in particular ways in history like the exodus and the exile. And he’s spoken in particular ways as in the 10 Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount. much harder to put words into his mouth.
