I had the honor of remembering and celebrating our friend Atul Butte today at a special symposium at the AGBT Precision Health meeting in San Diego. I shared the stage with superstars Chris Longhurst, Marina Sirota, Lucila Ohno-Machado, and Bimal Chaudhari.

In this new opinion piece, we explore our belief that AI can make a significant impact on health by helping humans increase their physical activity. A new version of the My Heart Counts app will soon help us test that idea.

Atul Butte died yesterday. The world lost a giant. A big bear of a man. With a huge smile. With love for everyone. With energy that could power a room. I loved everything about Atul. I loved how he was always happy. I loved how excited he was about science and helping people.

Juxtaposing the clear benefits of exercise with the likely (small) risks of low-moderate alcohol consumption. Not sure how far we can take this math but in a world where risks are everywhere and are hard to calibrate, it doesn't sound too far off.

One of the biggest challenges in large scale biobanking is cold storage. Who among us has not experienced the nightmare of a freezer failing? Or that Friday night call from the lab about "beeping" coming from one of the lab freezers?

No one chooses to be in hospital for Thanksgiving but, if you had to be, then maybe the winter double rainbows from the J7 wing of Stanford hospital could help the healing a little bit. ❤️
