One thing about the County Championship is how you hear four days of radio about the dog who’s taken up residence in the groundskeeper’s hut, a 1987 tour to India, & a kid emailing in about GSCEs, & suddenly there’s two hours of whipping around the country to keep track of edge-of-seat commentaries.

Robin Smith was my childhood hero and I wanted to square cut the ball like he did. Absolutely gutted.

I am old enough to remember hundreds of county players being forced to play with a Kookaburra ball for weeks on end, while the Test side was in action at the same time and not using one. Maybe it was a fever dream? Must have been. Imagine Surrey scoring 800+ and a bowler going for 200+? Bad dream!

A Saturday afternoon in Ikea, only made bearable by introducing my 15-year-old to Ikea cricket. You score a run every time you locate an item you want, but lose a wicket every time you see a family arguing. A respectable 18 for 3 today.
