Charted the first half and I don’t think Wink really let up much or changed really. Blitzed ~2/3 of the time. Barham did some dumb stuff early, Wink had some especially exotic versions of his blitzes, UW threw some quick game, and Zeke biffed a tackle.

Interestingly we saw Sherrone start mixing in more and more IZ with Bredeson inserting. Think they’re still trying to figure out the run mix that works for this OL. They’re not mashers and have feel for OZ, have to start there. But maybe need IZ for efficiency rather than gap.

Think Michigan’s run game clearly picked back up when they started going to more spread formations. Can still do this stuff in 12 if you want, too, so if they start giving you light personnel you can shift to heavier stuff.

3rd down stop was Wink showing that 0 blitz but dropping into their QQH. Hausmann popped out as the hook zone player and closed the window of the RPO.

Can really see Bryce’s clock going off early and messing with his footwork on these pure dropbacks and esp. on 3rd. Big costs to allowing pressure early.

Two straight OZ, two straight miscommunications on the front side of the play. Difference between OZ and IZ there. Never going to eat losses like that no matter what happens.

I have seen that exact block a million times this year on our D not draw a hold.

Re: Simmons’ success, they’ve been able to throw consistently against FZ and I would be surprised if they weren’t able to rep the heck out of this stuff over the bye week knowing that Wink would oblige them on early downs. Tons of over the ball + hitch to 1 strong. Those are the easy throws vs FZ.

Michigan has done a lot to move the O forward in a short time and I think the upside is clearly making these trades good. But man it’s weird to see so little inside zone and quick game. Hallmarks of the O the last 4 years.

Condensed sets have not worked this year. Give me OUs game plan vs M. 12 p wide sets, motion brede in for +1 runs, quick game to TEs against questionable pass cov LBs, and M at least has a functional RB OZ unlike sooners.

How long until Urban says Bryce needs to run it 5-10 times in the 2H

Wonderful play from Rod. He’s just so smart and it really matters on a D that is often being asked to do more than it can. As soon as he’s off the snap limit he should never come off the field.

Michigan thought they were getting a C0 on that 3rd and 7. Just tried to run a little rub to get out of any dropping rats and catch and run. Well done by Wisconsin DBs to switch the routes, think that cause Bryce to try to squeeze ball at last second when he saw CB jump route

Wink with 2 straight kills on third down via 0 blitzes. UW will go to PAP at some point bc we know Wink not gonna give that up. We’ll have to play our assignments to avoid a big chunk.

Hillman is going to try to tackle a ball carrier with his shoulder at some point and we’re going to really not enjoy the outcome. He’s constantly going for the kill shot instead of making the sure tackle.

Wisconsin starting to really bring the pressure consistently. Against OU I wanted to see us get to more quick game and more spread formations to help Bryce and the OL figure it out and would call for that here too. But we also saw OZ do work against UNL’s stunts. Big pers + gap the wrong answer.

I think Haynes should have been able to churn out the 1st down on wedge, but you really see this on the next drive starting with 2nd and 2. Counter gets CB blitzed as they force ball to bounce, feel need to throw on 3rd and 2. Can’t just churn 2 yards on demand

Think becoming more of an OZ + gap rather than IZ + gap run offense is having some impact on our run efficiency. The trade off I think is clearly worth it but they need to actually get to boot and other PAP a lot to make the EV pencil out.

Also continue to wonder what’s up with Michigan’s staffer(s?) responsible for flagging plays for challenge/review. The second down play was worth a second look but it’s the fourth or fifth time that’s happened where M probably had a >60% chance of winning the challenge and opted out.

Pressure rate so far is like 75% and we just keep fitting things badly. On dropback they’re just putting guys over the ball where the FZ is short on numbers. This isn’t amazing script stuff.

Pressures on 1st and 2nd down and we fit both poorly.

Guessing we see a ton of odd fronts and fire zones from Wink today. Not gonna respect the pass at all. When we’ve given up chunks in the run game it’s bc of bad fits and calls that made the fit impossible. Almost always gap runs and esp. counter.
