I guess I should be grateful this letter doesn’t have the offensive language in other terminations.

Extremely disappointed to see HHMI decide to kill their Inclusive Excellence program, including terminating the current IE3 awards to over a hundred institutions effective this year in the middle of a 6-year grant. I was hoping HHMI (and other private funders) would continue to lead the way.

New paper out! Across 3 large high school datasets, we found that girls and boys largely place similar value on math. No meaningful differences were found in the most recent dataset (2012), but some differences were found in the two older datasets (1990s and early 2000s). doi.org/10.1002/jad....

i hate to be a monocausal guy but i really think this discussion of masculinity, trade school, the gendering of education etc is beating around the bush. male democrats have seen no sizable drop in their desire to attend college. female republicans have. it’s about politics.

If universities want to retain female faculty they need to deal with the people who create hostile workplaces. That means actually dealing with sexual harassers, assholes, bullies, and every else who scores high on the dark triad. If not, you will lose your best people over and over again.

On a more serious note, there are some more somber takeaways for thinking about gender equity in STEM. For instance, girls' male-STEM bias rapidly increases with age, which could potentially drive them away from fast-growing tech fields such as AI. (Again, created this graph for wider reach.)
