In ch. 3 of Moby Dick, Melville uses the phrase "Hyperborean winter scene" as one of the possible interpretations of a painting. I take it this is meant to invoke the frigid far north; and indeed Etymonline lists "Hyperborean" as invoking polar extremes in English...

"Copestone" is an architectural/masonry term referring to the top stone placed upon a structure. I can't help wondering if the word could/should be repurposed somehow given the current popularity of "cope" in online spaces.

Tired of people jerking you around? Try this ancient Greek technique for social success! (The technique is oiling your body, donning a garland of leaves, draping a lion skin on your shoulder, and carrying a club. Presumably nude aside from the lion skin.)

stealth games be like "we need you to install this bug in the enemy base, but you cant get detected because then they might get suspicious. but if you systematically knock out every single person on the base while never being seen thats fine, i dont see why they would find that odd"

Incredible piece on Oliver Sacks. If you were ever awed at his supposedly true stories (I remember being stunned by the account of the autistic twins who rattled off large prime numbers), read this. He told wonderful stories, but they were in large part fiction.

Oliver Sacks Put Himself Into His Case Studies. What Was the Cost?
The scientist was famous for linking healing with storytelling. Sometimes that meant reshaping patients’ reality.

Carl Jung isn't exactly LESS full of shit than Freud, but he's admittedly full of shit in a much more entertaining way. "Guy who's basically a practising wizard but gets super annoyed if you point that out and loudly insists he's a Man of Science" is a type of guy you don't see much of these days.

What if you could become God, but the price was that your mind had to become "God-like" in the process, so that you accepted all this bullshit and suffering "must" exist in the world, and you would no longer feel driven to change it? Sounds like a terrible deal to me.

Discovered recently that I didn't actually know the literal meaning of "dabble." I could guess from its figurative use that it was vaguely like "dipping," but when an author described someone as "dabbling" in liquid I still couldn't really picture it precisely.

Because there are no facts but only interpretations, all interpretations must be equally valid (because an interpretation "being better" or "being worse" would be a fact), including the facile interpretation of Nietzsche contained in this shitpost.
